This I saw on an April day:
Warm rain split from a sun-lined cloud,
A sky-flung wave of gold at evening,
And a cock pheasant treading a dusty path
Shy and proud.

And this I found in an April field:
A new white calf in the sun at noon,
A flash of blue in a cool moss bank,
And tips of tulips promising flowers
To a blue-winged loon.

And this I tried to understand
As I scrubbed the rust from my brightening plow:
The movement of seed in furrowed earth,
And a blackbird whistling sweet and dear
From a green-sprayed bough.

Shang-Hai Love

From the Album: “Reaching Destination” by Nerisa del Carmen Guevara

Original Soundtrack - “THE LEAVING” (2010)

Poetry by Nerisa del Carmen Guevara, vocals/Chinese translation by Mr.Tong ✝, Erhu instrumental by Vicente Ongsiako.

This lovely poetry/song was written by an acclaimed Filipina poet Nerisa del Carmen Guevara from her Palanca Award (similar to Pulitzer prize) winning poetry compilation entitled “Reaching Destination”, with the same title of the Album. Ms. Guevara noted in the album that this song is dedicated for “Maningning”

When I heard about this song a few years back I was captivated by it in an instant. “Shang-Hai Love”, the lyrics are written and sang ethereally beautiful that I was dying to have it as one of the soundtrack for my first film. Gladly Ms. Nerisa responded! (thank you) And I ended up using “Shang-Hai Love” as MARTIN and GRACE’s theme and also the ending soundtrack in my first film “THE LEAVING 離別”. My only regret is that I didn’t made any subtitles of the song while it plays in the background, my bad. Anyway I’ll post the English translation of the lyrics here since I want to share how beautiful this song is.

SHANGHAI LOVE

“To find love”

“Decipher the lines on faces”

“Look for a face that reads:”

“I am here…”

“Finds a face that shows you shelter”

“Eyelids like archways”

“Leading into small gardens”

“Black door of the iris leading”

“to the soul…”

“Chimes of sunlight”

“Saying:”

“Come home, come home.”
